Wedding Day 1979

Sonny and I were married in Maine on a very hot day in July 1979, 35 years ago. Two days later, we began our honeymoon drive across country to Seattle in a 1974 Pinto.  We planned to drive that car till it dropped and fly the rest of the way. Surprisingly, the old Pinto made it all the way only needing a new muffler in New York State plus I drove it another year after that. We had a U-Haul car carrier installed which proved to be a problem till we got to Spokane, WA.  Every time we stopped, we had to tighten it down again.  In Spokane, a mechanic looked at it and said the guy in Maine had put the carrier on BACKWARDS so it was a wonder the whole thing didn't slide off along the way!

Morning after the wedding at
Twin Ponds Hotel, Farmington, ME
We traveled on the cheap budget plan
which meant we stayed in a several
interesting places. We had our camping
gear but never used it.
We returned to Twin Ponds for our 10th anniversary.
Much nicer car!

We threw pennies over Niagra Falls for good luck which seems to have worked very well for us!

We traveled mostly I-90.  It was a long, boring, hot ride without air conditioning or scenery. For entertainment,  I took pictures other drivers in the cars we passed.  As we crossed into South Dakota, we began to see the Wall Drug signs every mile so of course, we had to stop there to see what that was all about.

I never miss a chance to get on a horse.
Sonny found a lady at Wall Drug who wanted
a hug.

After being on the road for 7 hot days, we were tired of driving so Sonny drove straight to Seattle from Yellowstone's East Gate. We arrived in Seattle at 6:30 AM right into rush hour traffic on 405.  I was aghast!  Nothing like that was seen anywhere in Maine.

Now, it's 35 years later. Sonny and I are going to drive across country again shortly but in a comfy vehicle and at a leisurely pace.  We are headed for sunshine in Florida to see our new grand nephew as well as friends along the way.  We have no set route, only places we want to see while avoiding freeways.  In Florida, we'll meet up with more family and plan to convoy to Maine before heading West again.
