65249 264 miles 59-63* Windy and overcast The leaf from St Augustine is still on the windshield $3.65 Diesel gas
We left the hotel and drove into Georgetown for a walk on the Harbor Stroll. It was a quiet morning before most were up. Shops were closed as well as the Rice Museum. Homes had been built in the 1700 and 1800s. Large live oak trees, flowers, porches with rockers. We follow US 17 along the coast to Myrtle Beach where it was litter pick up day along the road. We stopped at Myrtle Beach State Park for a walk on the beach. The wind picked up in our faces and there were thousands of shells. Sonny's sharp eyes found a small welk shell nearly in tact.
Myrtle Beach is famous for golfing, both putt putt and links. There were mini golf parks on every corner on every block for miles. Strip malls also for miles offering $5.99 and $7.99 stores with beach wear.
After leaving the Myrtle beaches, Rt 17 became 4 lanes with quiet traffic. Homes had long porches and rockers. Closer to the beach, new homes were being rebuilt on stilts after Hurricane Hugo brought damage in 1989. "Bojangles" restaurants are in every town. We passed the towns of "Supply" and "Town Creek". and learned that Michael Jordan is from Wilmington, NC. We crossed the Cape Fear River and passed "Pollockville" (is that politically correct?). "Pick and Pull" was on a sign at the junk yard. "New Bern" was the birth place of Pepsi and a Weyerhaeuser Mill was near Vanceboro. There was a "Roadside table" without a porta potty nearby-how does that happen?? Homes were a mixture of stick built ranch style or manufactured. Washington City is the first city in the US named for President George Washington. We stayed the night in Williamston, NC
