Little towns tucked into valleys; roads have the word "run" attached: Buckeye Run Road, Wiseman Run Road, Waldo Run Road, Morgans Run Road (? What is that about?); evidence of oil and gas mining; beginning to see red bud trees with lavender blossoms; thinking about Walton's Mountain Museum but it was too far off our path for a visit to Schuyler, VA. We crossed into Ohio where US 50 is called the Appalachian Highway. The road is 2 lanes rural with well tended homes and large farms. Towns along the way: Tar Hollow and Knockamstiff (now a ghost town. Look it up!). Bainbridge claims to have established the first dental school in the US and we passed the Dental Museum. Sonny had been searching for a car wash to get some of the road dirt and grime from Maine winter weather off the truck, so we stopped in Hillsboro to clean up. Back on the road, we could see families gathered for the Easter Holiday. We skirted Cincinnati and crossed the Ohio River into Indiana. We were charged $100 for a room with a view of a wall so we walked the neighborhood to see the third orange sunset in a row. Seymour is the hometown John Mellencamp, one of my favorite musicians. He now lives in Bloomington so we didn't see him but did check the phone book for relatives!

The turn to Tar Hollow which derives its name from pine tar, an essential commodity in early Ohio households. It was taken from the knots and heartwood of the native Pitch Pine tree to be used in the home manufacture of balms, animal liniments, and lubricants for pioneer wagons and equipment. |
