Wednesday April 23 Marshalltown, IA to Mitchell, SD

68945      397 miles    45-65*   $3.79     20.8 mpg    Overcast

We found a Starbucks and then continued on US 30 W across Iowa to Sioux City.  The radio said that only 2% of the corn crop is in the ground. Normally, a much higher percent is completed by this time in April.

We passed the towns of Wyoming, Nevada, Correctiontown, Pocahontas and Holstein. We read that the movie, "Field of Dreams" was filmed near Dyersville on two neighboring farms. The baseball diamond has become a tourist attraction. The neighbors even developed a baseball team called "The Ghost Players" and on Sunday afternoons, they would play a game for tourists.  Hopefully, we can find the movie on Netflicks to watch it again.

The scenery was flat with large farms stretching to the horizon. We turned N on I-35 to US 20 W back to the country roads and local radio stations. Must have been a slow news day since one station read the obituaries from the newspaper. We got on the Loes Hills Scenic highway and crossed into South Dakota catching I-29 N to I-90 W.  Wind gusts became a factor.  Billboards appeared that said:  "Eat steak, Wear furs, Own a gun the American way".  Not a sign one would see in Western Washington State.

Yeah, found a Starbucks!

Into South Dakota

Entrance to the Corn Palace in Mitchel, SD.  Murals are made of corn cobs
that have been cut in half and stapled to the wall.  The murals
change every fall.

The Palace has become a showplace.  The murals inside are all made of
corn, too.

A favorite group from our courtin' and sparkin' days
will be performing this summer at the
Corn Palace.

This was an exhibit showing all the things
corn is used for.

The pigeon was trying to get the kernels off for dinner.

  1. Thank you for pictures of the corn palace, we did not go see it but saw signs for it for a few hundred miles.
